Sooo... Cats

Sooo... Cats.png

Cat lover or cat hater? One of my favorite questions is when people ask why I have a cat or why I would want another one! One study found that 60% of people are dog lovers with only 11% cat lovers and the rest loving both or neither (Livescience.com). I am one that loves both. Actually, I love anything furry and cute. If I could own a zoo or be like Tiger King, I totally would. I’ve loved animals my entire life, but my sweet mother on the other hand could not be any more opposite. She does not understand the love people have for their animals. Even though we had a dog for a while, he eventually was given away to a friend and our home was animal-less again. I, however, always wanted multiple pets, including cats. My mom is terrified of cats, so that was definitely never an option. But I knew that when I had my own home, I would have multiple pets. And now I do! Most people don’t understand why someone would want a cat though, much less two. So I thought I’d give some reasons to try to convince the cat haters to be cat lovers.

They’re adorable!

If you don’t think kittens are adorable, then there is no hope. Even my mom thinks our cats are pretty and she’s terrified of them. Just look at that face!

They’re independent and low-maintenance!

If you’re an extremely busy person, travel a lot, or simply don’t want to worry about taking care of another living thing, then cats are perfect for you. Just set them up with food, water, and a litter box and let them be. Cats are small so they don’t go through near as much food as most dogs. And yes, litter boxes sound gross, but there are “Litter Genies” that are just like diaper pails. Just scoop the gross stuff and dump it in the pail then the smell is magically gone. Thus, cats are extremely independent and easy to take care of or leave for long periods of time. Convinced yet??

They kill bugs and rodents!

Ever had rodent problems? If so, then you know the hassle it is to get rid of them. Once we got a cat, the mice in our basement completely disappeared. And anytime bugs comes crawling into our home, our cats are determined to kill them. Why wouldn’t you want free pest control??

They’re entertaining!

Cats are hilarious. Just look up funny cat videos on YouTube. That’s honestly how my husband and I decided we wanted a cat. They just make us laugh. They jump, pounce, run, swat, hang, climb, fit in small spaces, scare easy, and make funny sounds. Plus it’s extremely easy to play with them. A laser pointer is the best! Just sit on your couch and move the laser around the room and you’re both exercising your cat while being entertained! Can’t ask for a better mood booster!

They’re cheaper than dogs!

We have a beautifully and loving goldendoodle dog who I consider to be my first “baby.” I love him with my whole heart, but he is expensive. We even have pet insurance for him to help with the cost of caring for him. Most dogs are probably cheaper than our dog, but they still take more shots, grooming, and food than cats do. Caring for our cats has been much much cheaper than caring for our dog. Want a cat yet? No? One more reason to help convince you...

They can benefit your health!

Believe it or not, having a cat is actually good for your health! They can lower your stress and anxiety levels, heal bones and muscles with their purring, allow you to sleep better, boost your mood and energy, and even help with allergies for you and your kids! One study found that high pet exposure early in life appears to protect against not only pet allergy but also other types of common allergies, such as allergy to dust mites, ragweed, and grass (Goodnet.org). That’s good enough reason for me to want not just one cat but two!

Whether you’re a cat lover or not, you can’t deny that there are some pretty good reasons to own a cat. Even if you’re like my mother who can never be convinced to like cats, maybe you can at least have a better understanding of why someone might want one! Our house may now be overly full after adding another cat to an already full house with a toddler, goldendoodle dog, and black cat, but my childhood dreams of owning multiple pets has come true and my heart is even fuller!
